Mobile Phone Policy

This policy specifically refers to our Secondary School. Our aim on the use of mobile phones in school is to minimise disruption to learning and teaching and promote appropriate, safe use of mobile devices. Please note, the term 'phones' below can refer to any mobile device connected to the Internet, including tablets. This policy has been devised in consultation with staff, pupils and our Parent Council, and we thank all parties for their input.

Usage

Pupils are not be permitted to have their phones on their person in class time. Mobile phones should either be stored in their locker or in a container in the classroom and which staff will then monitor. Pupils should not, in addition, be using their phones between classes.

It is acknowledged that some pupils, for specific health & safety reasons, will be required to be in contact with parents at key times, e.g. break and lunch. As before, they can communicate in this fashion.

For parents needing to communicate with children during class time, contact should be made through the school office. Similarly, pupils are not permitted to contact their parents during class time using their phone, and all such communication must be through the school office.

Occasionally, pupils with identified additional support needs may benefit from using mobile devices in class. If this has been agreed in conjunction with Support for Pupils and Guidance staff, then they may use these devices freely.

Liability for mobile devices

A pupil bringing a phone to school is responsible for its care and usage at all times. It is, in the end, a choice to bring mobile phones to school, and as such, the school cannot accept any responsibility for damage or loss of any device. We advise appropriate insurance for any mobile device brought on campus, as the school cannot cover any loss or damage.

Teacher-led use of phones

Mobile phones may, on occasion, be used to enhance teaching and learning; staff will make clear to pupils when this is appropriate. No pupil will be disadvantaged in these circumstances if they do not have one.

Pupil responsibilities

Bullying or harassment of pupils or staff via mobile phone misuse is unacceptable in any form.

Using a mobile phone to take photographs and/or video clips of other pupils/staff without individual permissions is not permitted.

Pupils should not download material on school premises that could be deemed as unsuitable.

Use of mobile phones on any school excursions will be determined by the staff in charge of the trip.

There is an acknowledgment by the school that this policy will require to be reviewed at regular intervals as technology changes.
