Important Information: Parking on Campus/School Travel Plan 2018/19

As we settle into the new session, I would like to remind all parents, carers and visitors to the school of our car parking arrangements.

As our school roll continues to grow – particularly in Nursery and Primary – we are seeing a significant impact on the throughput of traffic on campus, especially during the start and end of the school day. We are concerned because this parking congestion is causing a significant safety risk for our children, parents, staff and visitors.

In addition to this, a number of staff who arrive in school at 8.30am continue to find it increasingly difficult to park and, as a result, delays are caused in the set-up of their classrooms for the start of the school day.

Unfortunately, we also receive regular complaints from drivers who hold disabled parking permits that they are unable to park in the disabled parking bays due to the bays being taken up by vehicles not displaying the blue badge. Please do not park in the dedicated disabled parking bays, unless you are the holder of a blue badge. As you will appreciate, parking spaces are very limited and sadly we therefore do not have the capacity to allow many parents and carers to park on school grounds. Therefore, we would appreciate if you could consider alternative options for parking off campus and walking your children into school. Please be aware that children move about the campus throughout the day – therefore, if you are driving on campus, please remain vigilant and drive at an appropriate speed. For clarity, I note below some of the specific arrangements and protocols already in place to manage the throughput of traffic on campus effectively:

  •  The drop-off area on the roundabout should only be used to drop off or collect children; this space should not be used as a parking or waiting area.

  •  Only park in the disabled parking bays if you are the holder of a Blue badge.

  •  Zebra crossing rules should be applied at the approach to the car park (between the Secondary building and sports field).

  •  Do not drive through, park or drop-off in any of the bus bays or bus bay pavements.

  •  Do not obstruct the gated access from Chapel Wynd or the emergency fire doors leading from the Gymnastics Hall – these areas need to be kept clear at all times in the event of an emergency evacuation.

  •  Be courteous to pedestrians – the campus is primarily a pedestrian zone and they should therefore take precedence.

  •  Be patient with other drivers and keep your distance from the vehicle in front.

  •  Closely supervise young children when on campus. Don’t allow children to wander across the car park without you.

We would be grateful if you could pass on this information to members of your family and friends who may be driving children to and from school. It is the responsibility of all campus users, including parents, pupils, staff and visitors to ensure that they park safely and fully comply with school parking protocols.

For your information please find attached our School Travel Plan 2018/19. This outlines the main issues regarding safe travel to and from school and we now have an action plan in place to take forward this session. A copy is available for download from the school website via the following link: School Travel Plan 2018/19.

Thank you for your co-operation and continued support in ensuring the safety of our children and all campus users.
