Geography

S1 Geography

The S1 Course reflects the Experiences and Outcomes from Curriculum for Excellence in Social Studies, People Place and the Environment.  The course is designed to promote active learning, thinking skills and problem solving in relevant contexts about our world.

WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY? – A skills based course to introduce elements of physical, human and environmental Geography.  Skills include researching, evaluating, presenting and problem solving and these are embedded in the topics below.

  • ATLAS SKILLS – how to become skilled in the use of an atlas to find out about our world.
  • WEATHER – how to find out about your local weather and present your findings.
  • COMPARING OUR CLIMATE - a research task on the Inuit of the tundra.
  • GROUP PRESENTATIONS – equatorial rainforest versus hot deserts.
  • OS MAP SKILLS – getting to know the symbols, grid references and route planning.

S2 Geography

This topical and challenging course for S2 is packed with up-to-date, real-life case studies that motivate and absorb pupils, and use Scottish and wider-world examples throughout. There is an investigative approach to geographical issues and topics which encourages pupils to work independently. In addition, a range of engaging exercises help pupils build vital geographical skills and specific activities develop literacy, numeracy and ICT.

Units covered are:

  • EARTH FORCES – the Earth’s structure and plate tectonics.  A taste of geology.  Case Study of a volcanic eruption and the emergency response to this.  An investigation into how places can be prepared for an earthquake.
  • RICH WORLD / POOR WORLD – using indicators of development to divide the world.  Case study of Ghana.
  • WATER: A RESOURCE FOR LIFE – an audit of our water use and a comparison with Malawi. Individual research on the role of Water Aid in Malawi.

National 4 and 5 Geography

Three Units are studied in National 4 and 5 Geography:

  1. Physical Environments
  2. Human Environments
  3. Global Issues

1. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS

Key topics include:

  • The study of limestone landscapes and river valleys in the UK.  This includes the formation of key landscape features and land management issues including sustainability.  Outdoor learning opportunities are integral to the course.
  • The impact of weather on land uses.

Personalisation and choice is possible through contexts chosen as case studies.

 2. HUMAN ENVIRONMENTS

Learners will study and compare developed and developing countries.

Key topics include:

  • Contrasts in development
  • World population, distribution and change
  • Issues like changing shopping patterns, traffic management, regeneration of old industrial areas, organic farming and GM crops are considered.

Personalisation and choice is possible through contexts chosen as case studies.

 3. GLOBAL ISSUES

Leaners will study major global issues and the strategies adopted to manage these.

Key topics include:

  • Health – Malaria, Aids and Heart disease.
  • Environmental hazards – Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tropical Storms.
  • Climate change and sustainability
  • The impact of world climates
  • Trade and globalisation
  • Tourism

Pupils will study TWO of the above topics

Higher Geography

Geography develops knowledge and understanding of the many complex issues which are shaping today's world.

COURSE OUTLINE:

The course is made up of 3 Units:

  • Unit 1: Physical Environments
  • Unit 2: Human Environments
  • Unit 3: Environmental Interactions

UNIT 1: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS

  • Atmosphere: global atmosphere and climate
  • Hydrosphere: global water cycle, with detailed study of river features
  • Lithosphere: selected British landscapes and their formation
  • Biosphere: natural vegetation change, ecosystems and soil types

 UNIT 2: HUMAN ENVIRONMENTS

  • Population: population structure, change and migration
  • Rural: selected agricultural systems, their landscapes and rural change
  • Industrial: industrial systems, landscapes and change
  • Urban: urban systems, patterns and change

 UNIT 3: ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTIONS

In-depth case studies from the Developed and Developing World.  The two themes currently studied are:

  • Rural Land Resources including a case study of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
  • Development and Health – consideration of development issue and case studies of health and disease.

Advanced Higher Geography

The Advanced Higher qualification in Geography gives an in-depth understanding of complex ideas about how the world works and also gives the opportunity to carry out research, with an emphasis on fieldwork.

The study of Geography at Advanced Higher level also gives the opportunity to develop a high level of skill in independent study, co-operative learning, objective thinking and the ability to communicate clearly and confidently. Pupils will gain expertise in the use of a range of maps, diagrams, fieldwork techniques, report writing and IT.

CONTENT

Unit 1: Geographical Methods and Techniques: fieldwork and statistical techniques and producing and interpreting maps and diagrams.

Unit 2: Geographical Study: requires the production of an individual project based on a geographical topic. It involves planning, carrying out fieldwork research and the use of statistical techniques to analyse the information collected.

Unit 3: Geographical Issues: requires the selection of a controversial topic and a review of it by identifying and evaluating different viewpoints.

 INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

  • Unit 1: Evidence of skills through course work
  • Unit 2: Interim report (March)
  • Unit 3: NAB

 EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Pupils will send off a 'folio' of work consisting of their Geographical Study and Issue. This is marked by external examiners and accounts for 70% of their final grade.

There is also an SQA exam which tests map interpretation and data handling questions. This accounts for the remaining 30% of their award.
