Support for Learning

The aims of the Support for Learning department are many and varied.  Our main purpose is to support pupils experiencing difficulties with learning in nursery, primary, and secondary school.

Information is gathered through consultation with class teachers, parents and any relevant outside agencies, starting at nursery and continuing until the end of secondary school.  Appropriate strategies are put in place to enable pupils to access the curriculum to the best of their ability.

Pupils experiencing difficulty may be assessed for specific learning difficulties in order that strategies may be put in place to enable progress through the curriculum:

  • Offering support through direct teaching
  • Support by learning assistants
  • Participating in co-operative teaching within subject classes
  • Consulting with subject colleagues on individual learning needs

In addition the Support for Learning Department liaises with subject departments, parents, pupils, school psychologists and the Scottish Qualifications Authority on Alternative Assessment Arrangements. This is to ensure that candidates who find it difficult to demonstrate their understanding are given appropriate support in their examinations.
