Sun Awareness
Information for Parents
Children love to play outside in the sun, but sunburn in childhood increases the risk of developing skin cancer in later life. Skin cancer is increasing in Scotland - fair skin and delicate children’s skin that burns easily is particularly at risk and needs protecting.
Nurseries/schools are concerned about protecting your child from sunburn and skin damage. Please help us to do this by following the advice below;
- Ensure your child wears appropriate clothing such as longer sleeved T-shirts and longer shorts.
- Provide a suitable hat that covers the ears and neck.
- Apply sun cream to any exposed parts of the body likely to be exposed to the sun before your child comes to nursery/school.
- Provide a bottle of sunscreen labelled with your child’s name for use during the day.
- Use a minimum of SPF 15 sunscreen that provides four star protection against UVA and UVB.
- Protect your child’s eyes with sunglasses that meet the European/British Standard (BSEN: 1836:2005) and have the CE mark.
Thank you for your support.
