The Broad General Education phase of your child’s education extends from Primary to the end of S3. Within this time it is our aim that your child receives a rounded education before they enter the Senior Phase in S4 and continue their journey towards National and Higher exams through SQA.

In January 2025, your child will be asked to select nine subjects to study in S3. The choices are offered in such a way as to continue the principles of the Broad General Education: developing knowledge and skills spanning as broad a palette as possible.

Then, towards the end of S3, pupils will be required to further personalise their curriculum and reduce their study to seven subjects for study towards SQA exams in 2027. Most learners will emerge from S4, as before, with seven SQA qualifications. 

In preparation for the course choice process, please take account of information shared in your child’s S2 Report as well as input from your child’s Guidance Teacher who, along with Carol Simpson (Skills Development Scotland), will be supporting every S2 child through the process of making their choices.
